Gurnee — A partnership between North Shore Gas and the North Shore Water Reclamation District is leading to cost savings for the district, and environmental benefits for the community.
The successes were achieved through expert guidance from the North Shore Gas Energy Efficiency Program, which also provided the Water Reclamation District with more than $225,000 in incentives to pay for the upgrades. The result is a reduction in energy use by 94,000 therms and the elimination of 497 metric tons of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of energy used by 65 homes for a year.
The North Shore Gas Energy Efficiency Program focuses on customers throughout the northern suburbs of Chicago — including residential customers, commercial and industrial customers, small businesses, and public sector customers such as the North Shore Water Reclamation District.
The partnership between the Water Reclamation District and North Shore Gas started with energy assessments at three District facilities, and then an overall Gas Optimization Study. That study ultimately provided a roadmap to the cost and environmental benefits, much of which came from leveraging new, ultra-efficient technologies such as heat recovery systems. The cost savings and environmental benefits will continue each year going forward.
The Water Reclamation District and North Shore Gas now have two additional projects underway that will lead to even more cost savings and environmental protection.
